The page contains an image of the ship ARCHIBALD RUSSELL and a caption reading: 'The ARCHIBALD RUSSELL [2,354 gross tons] coming up Channel in full sail in 1933. She was built by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in 1905. Gustaf Erikison acquired her from J. Hardie & Co. Glasgow who at one time owned also the sailing ships HOUGOMENT, KILMENY, and VIMERA. By a curious covenant, throughout her career, she had to retain the name ARCHIBALD RUSSELL.'HistoryFour-masted steel barque ARCHIBALD RUSSELL was built in 1905 by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company for J. Hardie & Co., Glasgow. In 1906 ARCHIBALD RUSSELL made the voyage from Sydney to Falmouth with a cargo of wheat in 93 days - a record time for that season. In 1923 the vessel was sold to Gustav Erikson and continued to sail as a cargo ship. In 1949 ARCHIBALD RUSSELL was sold to the British Iron and Steel Corporation and broken up by J.J. King & Co. at Gateshead-on-Tyne.SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many iconic vessels are also included in this visual record.
