DescriptionThis photograph depicts three-masted Finnish barque WINTERHUDE, possibly leaving Sydney Harbour after the vessel's October 1931 visit. Part of the photographer's ship can be seen in the lower left corner and an inscription that appears along the top of the image reads: 'Sailing Ship WINTERHUDE'.HistorySteel barque MABEL RICKMERS was built in 1898 by Rickmers-Werft, Bremerhaven, for Rickmers Reismühlen, Rhederei und Schiffbau for use on the East India rice trade. In 1912 the vessel was sold to Schlüter & Maack of Hamburg, renamed WINTERHUDE and employed on the South American nitrate trade. After being laid up in Chile through WW1, WINTERHUDE came under French control as war compensation. Throughout the 1920s the vessel was sold several times and for a short period was registered under the name SELMA HEMSOTH. In 1925 new owner Gustaf Erikson restored the name WINTERHUDE and the vessel became a regular transport in the Australian wheat trade. WINTERHUDE was sold to the German navy in 1944 before being taken over by the British at the end of WW2. In 1949 the vessel was broken up.SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many iconic vessels are also included in this visual record.
