DescriptionAerial view of the American yacht INTREPID during the America's Cup at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1970. INTREPID won the Cup in 1967 and would go on to win the 1970 contest also. HistoryThe innovations on INTREPID's design by Olin J. Stephens resulted in it becoming known as a " breakthrough yacht' and the underbody type became the standard of 12 metre racers for over a decade. INTREPID went onto to win two America's Cups and narrowly missed out on a third.SignificanceThe 1970 America's Cup was held in September 1970 at Newport, Rhode Island. The US defender, INTREPID, skippered by Bill Ficker, defeated the Australian challenger, GRETEL II, skippered by James Hardy, four races to one.
