DescriptionSet of oilskins comprising trousers, jacket and hat used by dockers in Brisbane in the 1960s and on the MV ARALUEN.HistoryOilskins have long been used by sailors as protection against foul weather. Originally they were generally made of canvas or other cotton cloth with a skin of oil applied to it as waterproofing, often linseed oil. Some were made of sailcloth waterproofed with a thin layer of tar. Rubberised cloth was developed during the 19th century.
This set of oilskins are rubberised cloth and consist of a set of trousers, jacket and a hat. They were used by dockers in Brisbane in the 1960s, and were left on board the MV ARALUEN. They are marked 'Property of AEWL Australia', or Association of Employers of Waterside Labour. The hat is a yellow 'sou'wester' style, whilst the jacket and trousers are dark grey-black.SignificanceOilskins in good condition are rare as they were always well used and regularly replaced. This complete set of oilskins is an excellent example of a form of protective clothing worn by all sailors.
