DescriptionView of Hobart towards Anglesea Barracks; a lithograph by A. Bes based on original artwork by Louis de Sainson. The barracks were built on Governor Macquarie's order when he visited Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) in 1811.SignificanceThe ASTROLABE sailed to the Pacific by way of the Cape of Good Hope and Australia. After a short stay in Port Jackson the 'corvette' sailed to New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji, New Ireland, New Britain and northern New Guinea before heading south to Hobart where the crew spent Christmas in 1827. This illustration is a significant record of that visit.
