DescriptionA postcard of the King Street Sydney sent by Third Engineer Fred Halliday to his family in England. The postcard reads : Leaving to Brisbane tomorrow night Hope you are having fine weather at home. Remember to me all love Fred.HistoryThese postcards dating from 1907 to 1908 were sent by Fred Halliday to his family in England from various ports around Australia. Halliday was the Third Engineer on the SS DALMORE on a voyage to Australia between August 1907 and March 1908.
Halliday married Edwina Webster (to whom several of the postcards are adressed) in 1911 and soon after, left on a voyage to India where he contracted tuberculosis. He was returning to England in the ship's hospital on the SS MALWA when on the 2nd February he died and was buried at sea off the coast from Marseilles, France. He was 28 years old.
According to his grandaughter, Carole E. Kellog, he never saw his only child, a daughter, Carole's mother. Carole inherited the postcards and they were a cherished possession from a grandfather she never knew.SignificanceThese postcards are a complete set of one young British sailor's voyage to Australia in 1907-1908. They are an insight into sailor's experiences of Australia, as well as a record of their messages to family and friends.
