DescriptionDiary written by first class passenger Richard Beatty. Beaty lists the names of the apprentices and first cabin passengers on board and the numbers of the other passengers on board. He includes the measurements of the ship and information on its owners, Aitken, Lilburn Line (Loch Line). Newspaper articles relating to Mr Beaty's departure from Scotland and his successful arrival in Australia are stuck to the pages, most are from 'The Argus' newspaper. The diary's first entry is dated Saturday 6 December 1879, the last entry is dated Monday 1 March 1880. The diary includes a list of alcohol available and prices, poems, an address to the captain, a satirical 'rules for seamen', a list of the codes used on board LOCH SHIEL and other information about the vessel.
