DescriptionThis open weave carry basket with handle is made from button rush, bullrush and red hot poker leaves.HistorySandra Higgs - also known as Harry or Harri - was born in 1962 at Coen, Cape York in northern Queensland. Sandra was taught weaving techniques by her grandmother. She now lives on Cape Barren Island, Tasmania and has learnt the skills of basket making using native Tasmanian and introduced fibres. Higgs uses creative weaving practices to make various shapes using combinations of coiling, twining, weaving and cross stitch techniques.
SignificanceThis work represents the contemporary artwork undertaken by Tasmanian women artists using both traditional and modern techniques and materials sourced from Tasmania. Tasmanian fibre works are fast becoming collectors items. The mostly female artists continue to diversify their techniques, materials and products to a point where the works are collected for their artistic merit above any utilitarian use they may have.
