DescriptionThis poster designed by Japanese artist Rockin' Jelly Bean was created to promote the Mambo Goddess fashion range. Having founded its reputation on men's surf wear and street wear, Mambo Graphics repositioned itself with the teenage market by branching into women's fashion in the early 1990s This poster artwork combines rock and roll raunch with the Mambo brand to create the Green Genie, a bold identity for their 2000 range.HistoryMambo Graphics is an Australian surf and streetwear company founded in 1984 by Dare Jennings and Andrew Rich and has since become an international design and fashion empire. Mambo began with boardshorts and t-shirts and typically has a bold and bright graphic style that owes much to the cheeky and impious sense of humour of its contributing artists. Mambo prides itself on anti-conformist sentiments, reinterpreting classic Australian imagery in often surrealist or dream-like landscapes. The humour and irreverence towards social conventions reflects surf culture's alternative, carefree lifestyle, and poses a challenge to the authority of mainstream culture.SignificanceContributing Mambo artist Rockin' Jelly Bean uses a raunchy rock and roll aesthetic to promote the 2000 Mambo Goddess range of surf and street wear. The Green Genie exemplifies the provocative mix of surf culture, art and music that has come to define the Mambo brand. This bold graphic style appealled to Australia's youth and was regarded as being in dubious taste by more conservative middle class Australia.
