DescriptionThis 1933-1934 tourist class deck plan shows passenger accommodations on the P&O liner TSS STRATHNAVER. It also includes black and white photographs of lounge rooms, dining rooms, nursery and two- and four-berth cabins.HistorySTRATHNAVER was built by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow for P&O in 1931. It carried the new P&O colour scheme of white hull with yellow funnels. STRATHNAVER departed Tilbury on its maiden voyage to Australia on 2 October 1931. It had accommodation for 498 first and 668 tourist class passengers.
STRATHNAVER was requisitioned as a troopship during World War II. It was handed back to P&O in 1948 and refitted to carry 573 first and 496 tourist class passengers. It was the last of the P&O liners to return to the passenger service after World War II.
In 1954 STRATHNAVER was refitted to carry 1,252 passengers in tourist class only. Most of its passengers were assisted migrants from Britain. In 1961 it was replaced by the CANBERRA and was sold to shipbreakers in Hong Kong in 1962.
SignificanceDeck plans have always been cherished mementos of a long sea voyage. This plan includes black and white photographs of rooms and furnishings on the P & O liner STRATHNAVER, which carried thousands of British migrants to Australia, particularly after World War II. The plan shows the tourist class cabins and can be juxtaposed with a 1959 plan in the ANMM collection showing STRATHNAVER's post-war one class configuration.
