DescriptionInvitation to the opening ceremony of the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre held on 2 October 2005 at Fleet Base East (FBE), Garden Island during Navy Week celebrations.HistoryOn 4 October 2005, during the Navy Week celebrations at Fleet Base East (FBE), Garden Island, the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre opening ceremony was held. Approximately 150 VIPs were invited and it was officially opened by Chief of Navy VADM Russ Shalders. Vice Admiral Russ Shalders joined the RAN in 1967 as a cadet midshipman and became Chief of Navy in 2005, retiring in 2008. The Heritage Centre is located in two renovated National Estate listed buildings - the Gun Mounting Workshop (1922) and the Boatshed (1890) in the Public Access Precinct on Garden Island in Sydney Harbour and exhibits various artefacts relating to the history of the Navy and its sailors. Rear Admiral Davyd Thomas AM, CSC, RAN and Commander Australian Navy Systems CDRE Geoff Geraghty also attended the event.
