DescriptionLimited edition stamped envelope featuring a colour image of the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS NEWCASTLE FFG 06, dated 03 July 2007. Edition 1 of 8.HistoryHMAS NEWCASTLE FFG 06 was launched 21 February 1992 and commissioned 11 December 1993. It is currently (2012) one of four remaining Adelaide class guided missile frigates (FFG) in service with the Royal Australian Navy (CANBERRA and ADELAIDE have been decommissioned).
The Adelaide class was based on the US Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry class. HMAS NEWCASTLE was the last of the six frigates and was constructed in Williamstown, Victoria with all previous class modifications incorporated. The class were the first RAN ships to be powered by gas turbines. In recent years HMAS NEWCASTLE has deployed in support of peacekeeping operations in East Timor and the Solomon Islands and Operation Catalyst in the Persian Gulf.SignificanceA limited edition envelope celebrating the work of HMAS NEWCASTLE and the Royal Australian Navy.
