DescriptionBarque JOHN WILLIAMS III of the London Missionary Society.HistoryThere have been seven ships owned by the London Missionary Society called JOHN WILLIAMS and used for the islands of Oceania. JOHN WILLIAMS III was built in 1867 and was based in Sydney. The London Missionary Society first dispatched missionaries overseas in 1796, to Tahiti. John Williams joined the society in 1817 and spent many years working overseas with his wife and children. He was viewed by the society as a highly successful missionary noted for his 'dynamic evangelism' and was an important figure in raising funds. While visiting the New Hebrides in 1839 where he was unknown by the locals, Williams and fellow missionary James Harris were killed on the island of Erromango during an attempt to bring them the Gospel.
