DescriptionA deployment book for the HMAS VENDETTA from August to December 1965. The booklet gives a history of HMAS VENDETTA and the route of the VENDETTA from August to December 1965. The majority of the text is an account of the voyage with photographs and articles by the crew. A crew list appears at the end of the booklet. The HMAS VENDETTA deployment for August 1965 to January 1966 was to patrol Vietnamese waters during the Vietnam war.HistoryThe HMAS VENDETTA was a Daring class destroyer, one of the first prefabricated all-welded ships to be built in Australia and launched in 1954. During 1965 / 1966, the year of this deplomwent book, HMAS VENDETTA had commenced a further tour of duty in South East Asian waters beginning in August 1965. She escorted the troop carrier, HMAS SYDNEY (III), to Cape St. Jacques in South Vietnam via Manus Island and Subic Bay. HMAS VENDETTA then carried out operational patrols in the Malacca Straits area until returning to Sydney in March, 1966. The navy undertook a 'half life refit' towards the end of 1971, a process which took 20 months and saw an "extensive modernization..and sporting a totally new silhouette". HMAS VENDETTA was decommsioned in October 1979. Some of her parts were used for HMAS VAMPIRE (II), the last Australian Daring Class Destroyer (now on display at The Australian National Maritime Museum as a museum ship) and she was broken up in Taiwan in 1986.SignificanceHMAS VENDETTA was the only Daring class destroyer to be operationally deployed in the shore bombardment role
and the only Australian - built warship to serve as a combatant in Vietnam.
