DescriptionDated 27 September 1916, this silk embroidered postcard features the rising sun and the crest of the Australian forces surrounded by the flags of the World War I allies. Under the crown is a banner which reads 'Australian Commonwealth Military Force'. The reverse of the postcard reveals it was produced in Paris, France, and sent from camp on Salisbury Plains in England.SignificanceThis postcard is an excellent example of the popularity of silk embroidered postcards during World War I. The postcards were hand-made in a thriving French cottage industry until their high demand resulted in mass production. They were popular among sailors and soldiers as souvenirs to send home.
