The certificate gives the rank (driver), serial number, place and date of enlistment (Melbourne 20 September 1916) and discharge (Melbourne 10 May 1920) as well as his period of service abroad and in Australia . The verso gives a physical description and a specimen of the signature of Allan Witt Edwards.HistoryAllan Witt Edwards was from Euroa in Victoria. Edwards joined the AIF in September 1916. He was discharged by the army in 1920 for being "medically unfit". He had spent 735 days abroad. Edwards wrote a detailed journal of his time aboard the troopship HMAS SHROPSHIRE on his way to England in 1917. It is object number 00029014. Edwards went on to serve in WWII as well.SignificanceThis certificate signifies the end of Private Edwards’s experience of WW that began when he left Australia in 1917.
