DescriptionThe painting depicts a scene on the deck of a ship at sea. Two seamen sit on a hatch, with the deck house behind them, splicing rope. This is a fully representational painting which shows detail of clothing, implements, and elements of the ship such as standing rigging and boats stowed in board.HistoryThe artist Sir Lionel Lindsay, is eminent both for his membership of the famous Lindsay family, and as a conventional member of the Australian art establishment for decades. Both Lionel and his brother Norman Lindsay appear to have been interested maritime images and included them in the subject matter of the irrespective works. Lionel Lindsay was a prolific artist and became known as an exceptional wood engraver and print maker. He wrote extensively on art and produced illustrations for numerous newspapers and journals.
