Description'The R N Galop' was composed in honour of the British Royal Navy. This music was printed in Sydney, Australia and dedicated to Mrs F H Stirling. During the 19th century Australia was dependent on the British Navy for protection of shipping routes and coastal patrol, until the formation of its own Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1911.HistoryIn the 19th century the British Royal Navy (RN) divided the world into strategic zones or stations. Each station had a squadron of warships that protected British interests. Australia was protected by the RN's East India squadron until the Australia station was created in 1859. The RN protected British shipping routes throughout Asia and the colonies of NSW and Van Diemen's Land. Most Australian colonies had their own volunteer navies to provide coastal and harbour defence, but they received vital support from Royal Navy ships. This dependence continued until 1911 with the official formation of the Royal Australian Navy.
As music was an integral part of people's social life in the home and at public events such as balls, recitals, concerts and theatre shows, sheet music was widely distributed for reasonable prices.
Maud Fitz-Stubbs was a Sydney-based amateur pianist who turned professional during the late 19th century. She started playing the piano in early childhood- her grandfather was composer and publisher Thomas Stubbs. With five children to support Maud published her compositions from 1892 onwards as well as performing and teaching piano.SignificanceThis sheet music demonstrates the role of the Royal Navy protecting British interests in the emerging colony of Australia. 'The R N Galop' was produced to commemorate the ships and their service.
