A mixture of plant extracts, alcohol and often other drugs, these concoctions promised the relief of a wide range of symptoms. One stop tonics such as 'Womaton', eager to address a range of issues, advertised themselves as being the solution to any number of complaints, often contradictory ones.
Before modern restrictions, these tonics often include opium, laudanum, morphine or cocaine which, while effective at reliving pain, served as relaxants and gave the impression that the tonics were living up to their claims.SignificanceMedicine chests associated with immigrant ships to Australia, like this one, are exceedingly rare. Medicine chests of this period highlight the state of medical knowledge and Government regulations at the time.
