DescriptionThis sheath and the knife and tools associated with it were used by a waterside worker between 1955 and 1990.HistoryBefore containers, cargoes were loaded and unloaded from ships using nets. Ivan Solomon used these tools to make such nets for the James Patrick Gear Store between 1955 and 1990. Several types of nets were made, one type hung over the side of the ship to catch any stray items of cargo, another type had a wire centre and was used to carry frozen meat.SignificanceThese personal items, well cared for, are part of the material culture of the waterside.
