DescriptionThis binnacle-mounted compass was made in the 1930s and was used on board vessels for navigation at sea. The oil-filled compass is mounted in the protective non-metallic binnacle, and has a glass viewing window. The binnacle would have been mounted in front of the helmsman, ensuring it was within easy reach.
