DescriptionThis souvenir program 'Australia Greets America 1925' was produced for the official State Government gala performance at Her Majesty's Theatre in Sydney on Tuesday 4 August 1925, in honour of the visiting United States Pacific Fleet. The front cover of the program depicts the flags of the United States and Australia united with a world globe, in the centre of an outline of Australia.
As well as text, the program features photographic images, including Admiral Samuel Shelburne Robison USN; George Street, Sydney; Sydney Harbour; the National Art Gallery; and the gala cast.SignificanceThis program is significant as a souvenir of the 1925 goodwill cruise of the United States Pacific Fleet to Australia, which renewed the Australian-American alliance established by the Great White Fleet visit in 1908. The 1925 visit contributes to a long history of US Naval visits to Australian ports starting with the US Exploring Expedition in 1839-1840, followed by the 1908 visit of the Great White Fleet and later visits in the 1940s in the lead-up to World War II.
