DescriptionBALLYHOO construction plan with hull sections.HistoryDrawings and blueprints are the original or prints of the plans prepared in yacht design. Ben Lexcen and his team of draughtsman and designers produced extensive number of plans for the designs. Some only reached a concept or proposal stage and were not very extensive or detailed. However other sets for final designs that were built usually included a large number of plans to cover the details of hull shape, construction, layout, appendages, fittings and rig plan. These plans all show the style and variation in design that Lexcen produced and make a good comparison with other designers of his era. In this group are plans of designs from other designers, and it was common for designers to collect copies of historic vessels of interest and contemporay designs for study and comparison.SignificanceThe Miller & Whitworth 80 Foot maxi ketch is a concept design for a maximum rating (70 ft) ocean racing yacht prepared by Ben Lexcen for an unknown client. It reflects his design concept that began with GINKGO and APOLLO in 1972, and the plans show his ideas for this type of vessel.
