DescriptionThis poster was produced for the International Fleet Review by His Highness the Duke of York at Sydney in 1988. At a scale of 1:10,000 a hydrographic chart of Sydney Harbour shows the position and route of the participating vessels, a list of vessels and their commanders plus the aircraft involved in the flypast.HistoryHuge bicentennial celebrations were held in 1988 across Australia with many spectacular events including the International Naval Review held on Port Jackson on 1 October. It was the Royal Australian Navy's contribution to the Australian Bicentennial. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York undertook the Review and salute from HMAS COOK (oceanographic research ship), escorted by the patrol boat HMAS WOLLONGONG. The Royal Navy was represented by HM Ships ARK ROYAL. Other navies represented included Greece, India, France, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, The Solomons, Vanuatu, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the USA. A flypast included naval aircraft, and representatives from QANTAS, Ansett and Australian Airlines; a fireworks spectacular lit the evening sky. The Review was a combination of static and mobile Review Lines from Bradley's Heads to the Sydney Harbour Bridge - three moving Review Lines of naval ships from 15 participating nations plus a static review of comprising larger ships at anchor, secured to buoys and alongside berths. Personnel were also lined along the battlements of Fort Denison. The Review commenced at 13.00 and concluded at 14.50. SignificanceThis poster represents the celebration of an important event in the history of Australia - the bicentennial of white settlement. It also acknowledges naval participation in the defence of the continent since 1788.
