DescriptionThis employment contract of the United States whaler HECTOR was printed in 1834. The contract lists the terms of employment for the crew of the HECTOR. It bears the signatures of the seamen, their positions aboard the vessel and their share of the profits at the end of the voyage. The HECTOR was a Union whaler who sailed during the American Civil War.HistoryHECTOR was a whaling ship built in New York, in 1818 and operated out of the American whaling settlement of New Bedford between 1826 and 1866. In 1866, HECTOR was burnt and destroyed by Confederate troops during the American Civil War.
SignificanceThe HECTOR was destroyed by the confederate raider SHENANDOAH.
