DescriptionSail plan of a Currawong 30, drawn at a scale of 3/8" = I'. It includes I.O.R. measurements, sail inventory with dimensions, remarks, as well as notes regarding standing rigging and mast.HistoryThe plans of the Currawong 30 design are for a fibreglass racing yacht designed to the IOR Mk III rule. A number were built and were very successful and capable small ocean racing yachts. One of the class, ZEUS II skippered by Jim Dunstan from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, won the 1981 Sydney to Hobart race. It is the smallest yacht to win this prestigious event. Professor Joubert was a highly respected engineer and lecturer and was a consultant for a number of private and government engineering projects. He had a sailing background and was a close friend of naval architect Alan Payne. Professor Joubert's involvement in yacht design fulfilled a desire to be involved in this aspect of engineering without making it a full time occupation. He produced a small number of production designs that reflected his objectives of creating a strong, seaworthy yacht for racing and cruising. He also worked on the design of fast catamarans for racing and setting speed records, this is a specialised and niche area of yacht design, but an area where Australia has demonstrated extraordinary success in the past through other designers and builders who were contempories of Professor Joubert. SignificanceThe plans of the Currawong 30 by Professor Peter Jourbert, represent the design for a small but very capable cruising and racing yacht built in fibreglass as a production yacht.
