DescriptionThis dark blue faille weave spandex swimsuit has a panelled bodice, a scooped back and a bust decorated with a white trim and a bow embellishment. Made in England by Kittiwake, the fully lined swimsuit has straps that fasten at the shoulder with plastic buttons, a zippered back and a half skirt with elasticised legs.HistoryIn the 1950s and early 1960s swimsuits and sunsuits were often shaped with panelling and built-in supports to create a curvaceous, ultra-feminine silhouette that emphasised the bust, waistline and hips.
As the 1960s progressed swimsuits became less structured. Designs focused more on comfort, influenced by the new synthetic fabrics such as nylon and spandex, which were lightweight, quick drying and far less restrictive.
Spandex, also know as elastane, is a synthetic fibre first invented in 1959 by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers. Used by swimsuit manufacturers for its exceptional elasticity and durability, it's most common brand name is Lycra.
