English "This canoe was made by Jack Molugutola of Tukwaukwa village, Trobriand Islands. Jack is the uncle of my wife. On May 10th this year (2019), I paid him a visit and it was during this visit that he gave me this canoe. There are three main types of canoes in this area. The bigger of them are called Mwasawal and they are used for the Kula Trade. The middle size canoes are called Kalipoula. They are built for fishing and transporting cargo such as loading new house materials from nearby islands. The smaller sized canoe of the three is called Kewou. This type of canoe is used for fishing or visiting friends from nearby islands. This model is the middle size canoe called Kalipoula." SignificanceThe name Kalipoula is from the Bigi Kilivila Language of the Trobriand Island. Milne Bay local artist Dickson Lige offered the Kalipoula model for sale to ANMM collection after musuem staff Helen Anu had visited Milne Bay.
