DescriptionThis linocut print by Torres Strait Islander artist, Alick Tipoti is titled 'Malungu' (From the Sea. It depicts men returning to their island after hunting for dhangal (dugong) and waaru (turtle) against skies that represent zibazib (sunset) and bani (dawn). The animals were killed in the traditional way, using a wap (harpoon) which can be seen lying across the shoulder of the buway garka (hunter).SignificanceAlick Tipoti is committed to telling the stories of his people, the Maluyigal of Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait), and thereby preserving their rich cultural history and traditions. This linocut depicts traditional hunting methods and is the print from the linoleum block that is also in the collection. Although the National Maritime Collection holds a number of Tipoti's prints, this is the only one that also has it printer's block.
