DescriptionDesign drawing titled 'Deck Layout 45' IOR Mk III', designed by Miller & Valentijn’. The plan is a detailed, hand-drawn design work, from 1975 or after, when Bob Miller teamed up with Dutch naval architect Johannes Valentijn. They continued to work on the original design for GINKGO at least up to 1976. HistoryFollowing the 1974 Americas Cup, when his 12m designed SOUTHERN CROSS lost to COURAGEOUS, Ben Lexcen moved to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. During that time, he became friends with fellow yacht designer and naval architect Johan Valentijn. He was Dutch and grew up working at his family’s shipyard in Holland. He studied naval architecture, marine engineering later starting his design career in 1971 with the prestigious ‘Sparkman and Stephens’ in New York.
Miller & Valentijn set up a design partnership in 1975 and worked on the original GINKO designs through to 1976 when Giorgio Falk had his GUIA IV designed and built to replace GUIA III (GINKGO) which had been sunk by killer whales in the Atlantic. SignificanceThis plan clearly shows the design team of Miller & Valentijn ‘working the yacht under sail’ and laying out deck and mast fittings to optimise the design. The materials and parts list shows the designers have calculated the size and strength required for parts and equipment and provide a purchase list for the builder. Ben Lexcen
