DescriptionA black and white photograph of HMAT CERAMIC which was used during World War 1 as a troop carrier. The frame around the photograph containing signatures of soldiers and the date "15.12.15". From this date, it is most likely that the soldiers were part of the12th Reinforcements for the 4th Light Horse Regiment. They departed Melbourne on 23 November 1915. This Regiment was recruited exclusively Victoria in August 1914. HistoryHMAT CERAMIC A40 was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd, Liverpool. She was White Star's first "all cabin class" ship and at the time, the largest ship to sail to Australia. HMAT CERAMIC was leased by the Commonwealth in 1914 until 9 July 1917. She was requisitioned as troopship for the Australian Expeditionary Force in 1914 and was one of the largest of the troop ships to serve. Throughout World War 1 she is recorded as having been fired on at least three times but each time she managed to outrun the enemy. In 1942 however she was sunk by a German U-boat and all 350 people, including civilians and children were killed except one who was taken prisoner. SignificanceTroopships have always had a significant role in transporting Australian troops to war but they are often the forgotten ships of service. This photograph and signatures are from early in World War I and reflect the excitement and pride of the troops as they leave Australia for the Great War, seen by many as a great adventure, the first part of which was going to sea.
