DescriptionColour photograph of HMAS VAMPIRE taken by John Withers from HMAS VOYAGER when deployed to South East Asia. From January to August 1963 HMAS VOYAGER deployed to South East Asia as part of the Far East Strategic Reserve (FESR). With a joint military force consisting of Commonwealth and US fleets, VOYAGER participated in exercises in the Bay of Bengal and South China Sea - calling into foreign ports from Trincomalee to Karatsu. SignificanceJohn Withers' documents provide significant detail on HMAS VOYAGERs' operational history prior to its collision with HMAS MELBOURNE in 1964. This includes photos of crewmembers at foreign ports during VOYAGERs 1963 deployment to South East Asia, and images taken by Withers of RAN Daring ship VAMPIRE and other allied vessels operating in the region.
