DescriptionThe object is a snorkel (breathing tube) for a diving suit used by Albert Olsen in the 1960's as part of his work with the CSIRO Department of Fisheries in Tasmania and South Australia.
\HistoryThe snorkel is a practical and simple invention whose concept has not changed dramatically in the thousands of years since hollow reeds were used. Modern snorkels such as this example once belonging to Albert Olsen, are comfortable and light weight made of plastic tubing and rubber or silicone mouth inserts.
SignificanceA simple piece of equipment, the snorkel allows divers to swim on the surface for an extended period of time - particularly useful over shallow reefs.
