DescriptionColour photograph showing MV Krait in a bay with numerous officers aboard, c. 1975. It has been autographed by eleven people including Operation Jaywick veterans Horace Stewart Young and Mostyn Berryman.SignificanceThe photograph is of great significance to Australian naval and military history due to its depiction of MV Krait, a vessel that has attained iconic status for its involvement in Operation Jaywick. It is a unique find as there are currently no colour and/or autographed photographs of Krait c.1970s in the National Maritime Collection of comparable quality. While other Australian public institutions or museums possess photographs of Krait, none are in colour or have been autographed by individuals involved in the covert mission. The photograph provides insight into one of the most daring and successful covert missions that Australia was involved with during World War II. The photograph’s significance is related to an aspect of Krait’s life, its return to and use in Australia post-1964, which has not been documented to the same extent as Operation Jaywick.
