DescriptionImage of ARA PRESIDENTE SARMIENTO, an Argentine Navy training ship, at wharf 1 East Circular Quay in Sydney during its July 1928 visit. Launched in 1897, the vessel made thirty seven annual training cruises including six circumnavigations of the globe. It visited Sydney in 1901, 1906 and 1928. It ceased seagoing activities in 1938 but continued as a training facility until 1961. It is now a museum ship in Buenos Aires.HistoryOn 10 July 1928, the Argentine Navy's training ship ARA PRESIDENTE SARMIENTO arrived off Middle Head in Sydney Harbour firing a 21 gun salute. The frigate proceeded to berth at wharf 1 East Circular Quay, where Captain Geronimo Costa Palma made official visits to the Governor-General Lord Stonebaven, NSW Premier Thomas Bavin, the City Commissioners and the State Commandant. The sailing vessel was opened for inspection by the public on 12 and 13 July, and the Argentinian officers and cadets attended numerous events held in their honour, including one hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club of New South Wales. The vessel departed at 8:11am on Saturday 14 July for Jervis Bay.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
