DescriptionThis image depicts a pressure vessel suspended across a trailer by the use of a shearlegs on the wharf at Glebe Island. The truck bears the inscription 'no. 61 / R. H. O'regan / pty Ltd / Carriers / 123 sussex st. / Sydney / ma1651' on the door. The pressure vessel has the stamped inscription 'Balmain / 40301 / Sydney / Firth-Brown Sheffield / o length 27 - 3 / o dia 8 - 0'. Three cars, possibly an SS Jaguar, Morris Minor and Ford Prefect, and a pile of metal sheets are in the foreground. The background is possibly a view across White Bay to Balmain.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
