DescriptionThis coloured lithograph certificate was awarded by the NSW Rowing Association to Henry Hauenstein for the Eight Oar Championships of Australia in 1911. It records the names of all the crew including J A Ryrie, E R Barker, A B Doyle, T C Parker, H Hauenstein, S A Middleton, K Heritage, R B Fitzhardinge, coach W J Middleton and the cox R G K Waley.HistoryHenry Hauenstein was born on May 3, 1881 in Sydney, New South Wales. Hauenstein was a member of the Leichhardt Rowing Club and was the first eight-oared representative to row in state crews. He competed in state teams in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911; winning in 1908, 1910 and 1911. In 1912 he rowed as (5) in the Men's Coxed Eights team at the Stockholm Olympics. Australia first sent rowers to The Olympics in 1912. The Eights crew won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Regatta en route to the Olympics at Stockholm, Sweden. A change of personnel between Henley and Stockholm resulted in the crew losing some form and they missed a medal, whilst the Leander crew, which finished second at Henley, won the gold medal for Great Britain. SignificanceThis certificate is representative of rowing in Australia in 1911 and the issuing of trophies and awards.
