HistoryThe design on the mug displays the contemporary popular idea of sailors. The mug was probably intended as an ornament, rather than for real use. The verse on the jug reflects concern for sailors and their need to contend safely with the wider world, both spiritually and physically, reflecting a Victorian concern with the life of the spirit. According to the OED and the Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea, the word Tar has reference to sailors generally, not only naval sailors, and relates to the early practice by seamen of tarring their pigtails.
