DescriptionA Sunderland lustreware mug featuring a British ship and the words "Succefs [success] to the Tars of Old England'.
HistorySunderland ware became popular during the nineteenth century. While originally named after the town in north east England, the pink or purple coloured lustre ware was also produced by other pottery firms in other areas.
The distinctive colour could range from pink through purple and was applied in bands or covering the whole surface. There may be the appearence of 'bubbles' or 'splashes' and the degree of sheen or 'lustre' may vary. Decorations were wide ranging - including maritime or military themes, commerorative styles for weddings, civil or religious buildings or quotes. Pictorial decorations were made by transfers and were either left as monochrome or were hand coloured.
All shapes and purposes of pottery were used and a range of sizes from mugs to platters.
SignificanceThe design on the mug displays the contemporary popular idea of sailors.The mug was probably intended as an ornament, rather than for real use.The verse on the jug reflects concern for sailors and their need tocontend safely with the wider world, both spiritually and physically, reflecting a Victorian concern with the life of the spirit.
