DescriptionThis watercolour depicts a scene along Sydney Harbour seen from Mrs Macquarie's Chair. Depicted in the foreground is a three-masted flagship with furled sails. The vessel is possibly HMS IRIS, a 26 gun sixth rate frigate which was the first flagship on the Australia station. Pinchgut (Fort Denison) can be clearly identified between the fore and main masts.SignificanceThis painting offers an early view of Sydney Harbour and the significance of Royal Navy ships as our primary means of naval protection.
