DescriptionThis boy's jacket is made from white cotton faille and features broderie anglaise inserts and trim on the collar. Worn in the early 1900s, the double-breasted design features mother of pearl buttons, a metal hook and eye clasp at the front, flap pockets at each hip, and long sleeves with scalloped cuffs. HistoryVictorian and Edwardian children from the upper and middle classes were often dressed in formal clothes, even for play. Boys under the age of ten were dressed in short suits - jackets, knee length breeches, stockings or knee high socks and leather shoes. Boy's jackets often featured large 'sailor' collars decorated with lace work, sashes, ribbons and other embellishments.SignificanceThis jacket is a rare surviving exmple of late Victorian and Edwardian children's fashions.
