DescriptionThis white cotton mitt is part of a pair that would have been worn with a lady's day or walking dress. The knitted mitt extends to the elbow, and features elaborate geometric patterning.HistoryWomen of the Edwardian period wore different types of gloves for common leisure pursuits such as riding, shooting, driving and promenading. Fingerless gloves, also known as mitts, were considered less formal, and were rarely worn after they hit their height of popularity in the 1840s. Cotton examples did appear around the turn of the 19th century, and were worn for walking or visiting.
SignificanceThe mitts are a rare example of fashion accessories worn by women at the turn of the nineteenth century.1890 - 1910
