DescriptionBroadside port view of steel barque SOLWAY at sea, topsails furled. In 1908 the vessel was caught in a hurricane shortly after leaving New York with cargo bound for Sydney. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the rest of the voyage to Sydney was uneventful. It arrived in the harbour on 23 May 1908.HistorySOLWAY was a steel barque of 1720 tons built in 1895 by Barclay Curle & Co.at Glasgow and owned by J & J Rae & Co. She had one deck and two tiers of beams and one cemented bulkhead.SignificanceThis ship portrait is by a prominent Australian marine artist and represents the transport goods between Australia and the United States in the early twentieth century.
