DescriptionPlate from Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde' 1834 - 1835. The plate has two engravings, the upper one is titled 'Pirogue en ecorce cousuel' showing an Aboriginal canoe, the lower one is titled 'Menure-lyre Casoar' showing a lyre bird and cassowary.SignificanceThis lithograph provides a visual record of one of the great French exploratory ventures of the nineteenth century (and, incidentally, one of the last). It is very important as a source in both the history of European world exploration and, more specifically, of the European relationship with Australia and its inhabitants.
