He took a great interest in photography and was a member of many socities such as the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory and the Association of Berlin artists. SignificanceAlthough the Age of Exploration was past, the age of scientific debate was still raging and theories such as Darwinism and evolution were hotly contested. The world was still seen through the lens of colonialism and indigenous peoples throughout the globe as subjects to be studied within the framework of 'types'.
