DescriptionAn untitled image showing two men and a woman performing "beachobatics" (photographer and location unknown).HistoryThe beach side phenomenon that became known as 'beachobatics' featured predominately on Sydney's eastern beaches such as Bondi, Tamarama and Parsley Bay. From the early 1920's displays were promoted by the numerous fitness clubs around the area such as the Graham's Men's Gymnastic Club in Waverly. Male and female gymnasts and fitness enthusiasts took part in public exhibitions of acrobatics and strength exercises. Performed either solo, in couples or large numbers, the spectacle was an impressive display of agility, strength and acrobatic skill. SignificanceWearing the fashionable swimsuits of the day, 'beachobatic' enthusiasts were an example of the healthy ideal that Australia promoted. Embracing the outdoors, strong and enthusiastic, these people embodied the aspirations of a nation in between the wars.
