DescriptionA wooden scuplture of a shark from the Torres Strait Islands. The body and the fins of the shark are carved from wongai wood and the inlaid teeth are carved from bone.HistoryAlthough Torres Strait Island carvings changed as a result of the growing tourist market yet, the carver of this shark has only used the traditional material of wongai wood and bone. The fruit of the wongai tree is popular with Torres Strait Islanders and can be eaten fresh or dried. Island lore says that once you have eaten the wongai fruit, you will always return. SignificanceWood carvings of marine animals are common in the Torres Strait and were traditionally used in rituals. Modern tools and the tourist industry has changed the appearance of these objects.
