DescriptionThe private log of SS GUNGA written by W T Angus, Chief Engineer, commencing August 1877 to March 1879. The title pager reads `Private log of SS GUNGA, from time of joining, commencing August 1877'. Also inscribed on inside front paper the author's details `W T Angus C. Engineer'. The log covers 21 trips in the Pacific region detailing register of counter, average, weather, oil account and remarks, last pages contain sums, drawings, poetry and notes.HistoryThe SS GUNGA was built in 1864 in Hull originally as a passenger ship for the Bombay & Bengal Steamship Co, Liverpool. After a refit in 1871 the ship was sold in 1877 Larrieu & Roque, registered Saigon and ran the Australia - Hong Kong route and the Pacific and Fiji trade. After running onto a reef near Cagayannes Island on a return journey to Hong Kong in approximately 1896, SS GUNGA was finally scuttled off Fremantle in 1912. SignificanceThis private log is of a type that is generally rare in that it covers an early period in the inter colonial general cargo trade. It is also differentiated in that it was recorded in such detail by the Chief Engineer, W T Angus, who provides extensive detail and remarks over the course of nearly two years.
