DescriptionA coil-woven basket with a handle by Susan Marawarr made from dyed and coiled pandanus fibre.Bunches of pandanus fibres have been methodically coiled and stitched together to form this traditional basket. Language: Kuninjku Region: West Central Arnhem Land Community: Maningrida Homeland: Mumeka Moiety: Duwa Subsection: Belinj HistorySusan Marawarr is a skillful weaver, printmaker, sculptor and bark painter from the Maningrida artist community. Marawarr learnt to make a variety of traditional fibre items from her mother Mary Wurdjedje and second mother Mary Marabamba. These include the patterned coiled baskets such as this example here. In 2000 Susan Marawarr assisted Waanyi artist Judy Watson with her installation ngarrn-gi land/law of steel fish-traps and bronze dilly bags in the Walama Forecourt at Sydney International Airport. SignificanceThis basket is an example of the coiled basketry technique and typifies the way that it has spread and diversified from south-eastern Australia to northern Australian communities, particularly Arnhem Land.
