DescriptionThis publicity poster for the 1964 United Artists movie 'For Those Who Think Young', features a man and woman running down the beach carrying surfboards. The poster was printed by Robert Burton Pty Ltd in Sydney, circa 1964. The film starred James Darren, Pamela Tiffin and Paul Lynde and co-starred Tina Louise, Bob Denver, Robert Middleton and Woody Woodbury.HistoryDuring the 1950s and 1960s Hollywood developed the beach party movie as a genre. Plots usually centered on teenage gangs that lived around beach. The appeal of surfing in popular culture was in part due to the 1957 publication of Frederick Kohner's novel 'Gidget' and subsequent 'Gidget' films and television series. Following on from the appeal of 'Gidget', American International Pictures created the surprise hit 'Beach Party' in 1963, helping to popularise surfing and surf music in films.
'For Those Who Think Young' was a 1964 beach party film. It featured James Darren and Pamela Tiffin as 'Ding' who get mixed up in plans to have a popular teen hangout shut down. Mickey Dora, a prominent surfer of the time, played a role as a college boy extra in the film.SignificanceThis printed poster provides a significant example of the penetration of American surfing culture into Australia. It also provides an example of the promotional material associated with beach party movies produced during the 1950s and 1960s.
